The skate coach is a unique and vital role in this show, analogous to the dance captain, but focused on skating skills.
Starlight Express's first skate coach was Mark Davis, who performed the role whilst being a member of the original London company. Davis also worked with the first Bochum company.
Starlight Express's most famous skate coach is Michal Fraley, who has been with the show since 1987. After initially working with the Broadway company as a freelancer, he became resident skate coach after a group of experienced skaters in the company petitioned the producers to create the permanent role, separate from the cast[1]. He has since worked on almost every professional production of Starlight Express.
