"Freight" is a musical number in Act 1. It introduces the Freight train.
Context[]
Rusty is told by Control to fetch the Freight train, in order to assemble all the characters so the racing engines can choose their race partners. As the Freight train arrives, the Coaches taunt and tease them, while Rusty switches between the two trains to try to avoid chaos. Control calls order, and the Freight trucks introduce themselves in turn: The Box Cars, the Rockies, who are boxers; Flat-Top the graffiti-covered punk brick truck; sweet, shy, large Dustin who would rather avoid the limelight; and the bright, seemingly helpful Red Caboose.
History[]
In the original production, Greaseball pulled the Coaches while Rusty was shunting the Freight. In the 1987 Broadway re-writes Greaseball was removed from the number, leaving all the work to Rusty. The 1993 Las Vegas show edited out a few repeated lines to shorten the number. The 1992 London revisions removed Caboose from the show and therefore this number.
In 2003, the US Tour had significant rewrites by David Yazbek throughout the show, including changing the Rockies to Hip Hoppers. Initially to be in keeping with this new identity, the Hoppers' solo in Freight was re-written to a rap, as were Flat-Top's and Dustin's to match the style. However these alterations were reversed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, and the Hoppers went on to use a slightly altered version of the original Rockies' lyrics.
The Broadway, German, and Japan/Australia tours all initially ran with four Rockies, requiring slight lyric changes. The German show lost Rocky 4 by 1990.

Original London Lyrics[]
FREIGHT: | Freight is great
Freight is great | |||
We carry weight | |||
Cause we are freight | |||
And freight is Great | |||
Freight is great | |||
Freight is great | |||
We never sulk | |||
We hulk the bulk | |||
And freight is great | |||
We never make a fuss | |||
You got the goods on us | |||
We take the loads | |||
From off the roads | |||
And Freight is Great | |||
COACHES: | Couldn't stand gravel and sand
Being ignored, no one on board
Nobody complaining we were late again
I should hate carrying freight
Nobody living in me | |||
Got to be a living breathing passenger train!
FREIGHT: | Freight is Great
Freight is Great | |||
FREIGHT: | COACHES: | ||
Freight | Couldn't stand gravel and sand
Being ignored, no one on board
Is Great | Nobody complaining we were late again
We carry weight | I should hate carrying freight
Nobody living in me | |||
And Freight is Great | Got to be a living breathing passenger train!
FREIGHT: | COACHES: | It's Mamas and Papas
It's commerce and hoppers
It's daughters and sons
It's quarters and tons | |||
They get in your hair | |||
It's the fun of the fair | |||
Freight | |||
Folks | |||
Tares | |||
Fares | |||
Passengers, commuters and mail
Trees and meat | |||
Gravel and Shale | |||
FREIGHT: | Are great, are great, | COACHES: | Are great, are great, |
Are great, are great, | Are great, are great,
Are Great... | Are Great... |

Broadway Introduction Lyrics[]
The 1987 Broadway production added Rocky 4, and so revised the Rockies' introductions.
ROCKY 1: | I'm Rocky, I got no Equal, |
If you missed me, catch the sequel!
ROCKY 2: | I'm Rocky 2, and there's more - |
ROCKY 3: | I'm Rocky 3, |
ROCKY 4: | I'm Rocky 4! |
Revised London Introduction Lyrics[]
The later London show, without Caboose, re-wrote the lyrics to cover his absence without changing the music.
FLAT-TOP & DUSTIN: | Travelling with gravel in |
Praying that we don't get wet
Water and mortar do things they didn't oughta
Empty me before I set! | |
FREIGHT: (to Caboose's melody) | Down the track |
From A to B and back | |
We carry things, not people
People talk a lot | |
That isn't what | |
We like | |
COACHES: | They're strong and silent! |
FREIGHT: | None of us |
May be a genius | |
But we know one thing, what we know is:
Freight is Great! |

2nd US Tour Introduction Lyrics[]
This was an early rewrite also features the coaches saying "stone and sand" instead of the former "gravel and sand". The Hoppers, Flat-Top and Dustin rap their introductions whereas Caboose's introduction stays the same with its soft melody, which is a very harsh transition from the end of Dustin's verse to his. They later replaced this version with the original Rockies introduction.
CONTROL: | Come on, come on! |
Stop fooling around! | |
Hoppers, | |
Line up for roll call! | |
HOPPERS: | Yeah, yeah, yeah! |
HOPPER 1?: | I'm a Hip Hopper |
HOPPER 2?: | A heart stopper |
HOPPER 3?: | A cart topper |
HOPPERS: | Nothing's gonna stop us |
When you're a Hopper | |
You better be in | |
'Cause you're filled to the top
For an area trip | |
HOPPER 1?: | That's the trick to run |
When they fill you with bricks
But with rocks in your box
You still gotta be slick
HOPPER 2?: | We pull it off! |
HOPPER 3?: | Huh! |
HOPPERS: | We're sexy beasts! |
We look like jocks | |
But we rhyme like artistes!
FLAT-TOP: | My name is Flat-Top |
I carry bricks! | |
It's what I do | |
It's not for kicks! | |
They lay it on | |
10 tonnes a day | |
That's what I do | |
Now go away! | |
DUSTIN: | I'm Dustin! |
I'm bustin' | |
To travel | |
With gravel | |
My destiny is callin' | |
HOPPERS, FLAT-TOP & DUSTIN: | So let's get hot! |
And we're ready to roll!
CABOOSE: | At the back |
On every piece of track | |
I'm right behind you - | |
If I can be of help at all | |
Then simply call | |
On me | |
FREIGHT: | You've got |
To have | |
The brakes | |
None of us | |
May be a genius | |
But we know one thing | |
And what we know is - | |
Freight is great! | |
Freight is great! |

2017 London Workshop Introduction Lyrics[]
The 2017 workshop brought a new introduction for Caboose. Musically, it uses a swung version of the melody for Caboose's act 2 solo, "Wide Smile".
CABOOSE: | Who makes trains brake? The Red Caboose! |
Nice guy? Oh my, fake news!
If the brake engages, you'll be slowing.
If you pay my wages, you'll keep going.
No cash? Train crash! Big mistake.
FREIGHT: | Red Caboose, we could use one big break. |

Fair play? No way! Fake news!

CABOOSE: | And they stay on the tracks! |

2024 Wembley Introduction Lyrics[]
The song starts the same as the 1992 New Starlight version does with the coaches complaining, Belle tweaking Ashley's line of "the dumb trucks" to "the dozy trucks".
CONTROL: | Control, Control! |
You trucks and coaches cut it out!
Trucks will identify themselves!
Fuel trucks? | |
FUEL TRUCKS: | Yeah, yeah, yeah! |
PORTER: | I'm Porter |
I carry coal! | |
Night and day | |
That's my role! | |
LUMBER: | I'm Lumber with timber |
Timber's good! | |
You got coal, | |
I got wood! | |
SLICK: | I'm oily, |
Sleek, and quick! | |
Guess that's why | |
They call me, Slick! | |
FUEL TRUCKS: | Freight! |
Is great! | |
SLICK: | So don't tell us |
"No more oil" | |
That's so unkind! | |
I'm refined- | |
FUEL TRUCKS: | And we'd like to remind you |
We power the world | |
Whatever the weather | |
Until you get your act together!
ALL: | Freight! |
Are great! | |
Are great! | |
Are great! | |
Are- | |
CONTROL: | Hold up! |
There's still one more truck!
This is Hydra! | |
(tune changes to Hydrogen)
HYDRA: | It's not a matter of if, |
It's a matter of when, | |
For- | |
ALL: | Hydrogen! |
It's not a matter of if, | |
It's a matter of when, | |
For hydrogen! | |
HYDRA: | I'm the fuel of the future! |
Gonna substitute your coal and oil
They've had their time | |
We're better off without their grime!
ALL: | It's not a matter of if, |
It's a matter of when, | |
For hydrogen! | |
It's not a matter of if, | |
It's a matter of when, | |
For hydrogen! | |
HYDRA: | I'm the hero of net zero! |
CONTROL: | Hey! |
HYDRA: | I'm shaking up the status quo! |
CONTROL: | Oh! |
SLICK: | This truck is so unstable! |
Any moment it may blow! |
