Rusty and Dustin is the short recit scene following the Starlight Sequence where Rusty finds Dustin asleep, and convinces him to race together.
Context[]
Rusty has just undergone a transformative experience - he has met The Starlight Express, and has discovered he has the power to achieve his dreams, win the race, and get the girl. Only one small problem - in order to win the race he must enter the race, and in order to enter the race, he needs a partner.
Rusty hears a cough, and Dustin has been napping nearby. Dustin understands and believes in Rusty, and agrees to race with him - after all he's pretty quick downhill! And it happens, that the re-run of the final will be on the Downhill track.
History[]
For 33 years, the scene varied little from one production to the next. Musically, it used the melody from "Belle's Song", as in context it is a reprise of "Starlight Express Intro" where Rusty asked Belle to race in the original storyline. Although all other elements of Rusty and Belle's race are no longer used, the music in this scene echoed the original plot. The original London production was, however, slightly longer than subsequent productions, adding a line in which Dustin complained, gently, about smuts from steam trains. In later productions, this was replaced by Dustin asking "Where are we going?", which seems incongruous with Dustin having given the impression earlier that he understood they were off to race in the Downhill Final.
The scene was rewritten for the 2017 workshop and subsequent 2018 Bochum revisions. Although it communicated the same story, this version uses the Coaches' melody from 'Call Me Rusty' and different lyrics.
In the 2024 London revival the scene is replaced by "Hydrogen".
