Originally a New Yorker, Shezwae comes to starlight Express from playing Ronette in the original West End production of Little Shop of Horrors. Prior to that, while doing a concert tour of France, she met her English audio engineer husband John Gibbons and moved to London.
Miss Powell's show business career has been varied. She has appeared on Broadway in such shows as Ain't Misbehavin, Timbuktu, Raisin, Tricks, and Jesus Christ Superstar, at New York's Lincoln Centre in The Taking of Miss Janie, at the New York Shakespeare Festival in Lullaby and Goodnight and Ancestors, on national television and at the John F. Kennedy Center as a soloist in Leonard Bernstein's Mass, as a soloist at The Theatre des Champs Elysees in Great Day In The Mornin with Jessye Norman, and as the female lead in the American national tour of the Pulitzer prize-winning play No Place to Be Somebody.
Miss Powell has done world tours singing with Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, Englebert Humperdink, and has her own rock act which opened to rave reviews at the Donmar Warehouse. In addition to this you can hear her singing and spoken voice on many TV and radio commercials. As a backing singer Miss Powell has supported many top recording artists both live and in the studio including current hits by Patsy Kensit and Kylie Minogue.
