Taunting Rusty is a short scene between musical numbers, in which Greaseball and his Gang pick on Rusty.
Context[]
The initial version of this scene had Greaseball and the Gang teasing Rusty for his hopes of entering the race, before he is sent on errands by Control, running into the full length song "Call Me Rusty".
The later London version has National Engines as well as Greaseball, pushing Rusty around and making him run errands for them. They are interrupted by Control who calls everyone to order, reinforcing Rusty's role running errands while the racers relax and prepare for the race. Rusty is sent to fetch the coaches and returns, singing a single verse of "Call Me Rusty" as the coaches interject, leading into "Lotta Locomotion".
Broadway did not really have a scene with the Engines taunting Rusty, just Greaseball and the gang plotting to scare him with "It's Rusty! Get him / Scare him / Outta the way", before Rusty and the coaches entered in "Engine of Love".
The German production initially used the same format as Broadway, with Rusty's distant "Woowoo! Woowoo! Keine kann es besser als die Dampflok" leading into "Engine of Love". However later revisions included a translation of the earlier London version to run into the fragment of "Call Me Rusty", "Nennt Mich Rostig". The current German production considers the two elements to be one scene, Greaseball and Gang beating on Rusty, and the coaches laughing at his ambition.
the 2003 US Tour used the same concept as the later London version, but entirely paraphrased. The 2004 UK Tour reverted to the later London version, reduced to four engines with the removal of Bobo and Espresso.
